What Is a College GPA?

A college GPA (Grade Point Average) is a number that represents your academic performance based on the grades you earn in your college courses. Most colleges use a 4.0 GPA scale, where an A is worth 4.0 points, a B is worth 3.0 points, a C is worth 2.0 points, a D is worth 1.0 point, and an F is worth 0 points.

Our College GPA Calculator helps you quickly calculate your GPA by entering each course, your grade, and the number of credit hours.

How to Use the College GPA Calculator

You can calculate your college GPA in a few simple steps:

  1. Enter the name of each college course.
  2. Select the grade you received for each course.
  3. Enter the credit hours for each course.
  4. Click Calculate College GPA.
  5. Review your GPA, total credits, and quality points.
Tip: Add every course that should be included in your GPA calculation. Courses with more credit hours have a greater effect on your overall GPA.

How Is College GPA Calculated?

College GPA is calculated by converting each letter grade into grade points, multiplying those points by the course’s credit hours, and then dividing the total quality points by the total number of credits.

College GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

For example, if you earn an A in a 3-credit course, the course contributes 12 quality points because 4.0 × 3 = 12.

On a standard 4.0 scale, college GPA is calculated by converting each letter grade to its GPA value, multiplying that value by the course credits, and dividing total quality points by total credit hours.

GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

For example, if you earn a B (3.0 GPA points) in a 3-credit course, that course contributes 9 quality points:

3.0 × 3 = 9 quality points

Your college may use a different grading scale or policy, so check your institution’s official GPA requirements when an exact GPA calculation is needed.

College GPA Scale

This calculator uses a common unweighted 4.0 GPA scale:

Letter Grade Grade Points
A 4.0
B 3.0
C 2.0
D 1.0
F 0.0

Some colleges use additional grades such as A-, B+, or B-. Grading policies can also vary between institutions. This calculator uses the basic A-to-F 4.0 scale shown above.

College GPA Calculation Example

Suppose you completed three courses with the following grades and credit hours:

Course Grade Credits Quality Points
English A 3 12
Mathematics B 3 9
Computer Science A 4 16
Total — 10 37
GPA = 37 ÷ 10 = 3.70

In this example, the student’s college GPA is 3.70.

Do Credit Hours Affect College GPA?

Yes. Credit hours determine how much each course contributes to your GPA. A course with more credit hours has a greater effect than a course with fewer credit hours.

For example, an A in a 4-credit course contributes 16 quality points, while an A in a 2-credit course contributes 8 quality points. This is why entering the correct credit hours is important when calculating your college GPA.

Remember: Always use the credit hours assigned to the course by your college or university.

College GPA Calculator vs. High School GPA Calculator

Both calculators use grades and grade points to calculate GPA, but they target different students and academic levels.

College GPA High School GPA
Designed for college students Designed for high school students
Uses college courses and credit hours Uses high school courses and credits
Commonly calculated on a 4.0 scale May use weighted or unweighted scales

The basic GPA formula can be similar, but individual colleges and schools may use different grading policies.

What Is a Good College GPA?

What counts as a good college GPA depends on your college, major, academic goals, scholarships, and future plans. Generally, a GPA above 3.0 is considered solid, while a GPA around 3.5 or higher is often viewed as strong.

However, there is no single GPA that is considered good for every student. Some graduate programs, scholarships, and employers may have their own GPA requirements.

Why Your College GPA May Be Different

Your college may use a grading system that includes plus and minus grades, different grade-point values, repeated-course policies, or other rules that affect GPA calculations.

The College GPA Calculator on this page uses the common 4.0 A-to-F scale. If your college uses a different grading policy, check your institution’s official GPA guidelines for the exact calculation.
