What Is an HS GPA?

An HS GPA, or high school Grade Point Average, is a numerical representation of your academic performance. It converts your letter grades into grade points and calculates an average based on the courses you take.

Our HS GPA Calculator helps high school students quickly calculate their GPA using a standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Enter your courses, select your grades, add the credit hours, and calculate your high school GPA instantly.

Because schools can use different grading policies, your official GPA may be calculated differently by your high school. Use this calculator as a convenient estimate of your GPA.

How to Use the HS GPA Calculator

Calculating your high school GPA is simple. Follow these steps:

  1. Enter your courses: Add the names of your high school classes.
  2. Select your grades: Choose the letter grade you received in each course.
  3. Enter credit hours: Enter the number of credits assigned to each course.
  4. Add more courses: Use the + Add Course button if you have additional classes.
  5. Calculate your GPA: Click Calculate HS GPA to see your result.

The calculator uses the credit hours to give more weight to courses with more credits. Your result shows your GPA on a standard 4.0 unweighted scale along with your total credit hours.

How Is High School GPA Calculated?

A high school GPA is calculated by converting each letter grade into grade points and then finding the weighted average of those points based on credit hours.

For example, an A is generally worth 4.00 grade points, while a B is worth 3.00 grade points. If a course has more credit hours, its grade has a greater effect on the calculated GPA.

GPA Formula:
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Quality points are calculated by multiplying the grade points for a course by the number of credit hours for that course.

High School GPA Example

Suppose a student has three courses with the following grades and credit hours:

Course Grade Grade Points Credits
English A 4.00 3
Mathematics B+ 3.30 3
Science A- 3.70 4

The total quality points are:

(4.00 × 3) + (3.30 × 3) + (3.70 × 4) = 36.70

The student has 10 total credit hours, so:

36.70 ÷ 10 = 3.67 GPA

The resulting high school GPA is approximately 3.67.

High School GPA Scale

This HS GPA Calculator uses a standard unweighted 4.0 scale. The common grade-point values used by the calculator are:

Letter Grade GPA Points
A 4.00
A- 3.70
B+ 3.30
B 3.00
B- 2.70
C+ 2.30
C 2.00
C- 1.70
D+ 1.30
D 1.00
F 0.00

Some high schools use different grade-point scales, plus/minus systems, or special rules. Always check your school's grading policy when you need an official GPA.

Unweighted vs. Weighted High School GPA

An unweighted GPA generally evaluates grades using the same 4.0 scale regardless of whether a course is regular, Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or another advanced course.

A weighted GPA may give additional grade points for more challenging courses. For example, some schools may add extra points for Honors, AP, IB, or other advanced classes.

This calculator is designed for an unweighted high school GPA. If you want to account for course-level weighting, use our Weighted GPA Calculator.

Why Does Your High School GPA Matter?

Your high school GPA can be an important part of your academic record. Colleges, universities, scholarship programs, and other educational opportunities may consider GPA along with coursework, test scores, activities, essays, and other application factors.

GPA is only one measure of academic performance. Different schools and programs can use different admission requirements, so students should check the specific requirements of the colleges or programs they are interested in.

How to Improve Your High School GPA

If you want to improve your GPA, consistent academic habits can make a difference. Consider the following strategies:

  • Keep track of assignments, projects, and upcoming exams.
  • Focus on understanding difficult subjects early.
  • Ask teachers for help when you are struggling.
  • Review your grades regularly instead of waiting until the end of the term.
  • Use your available study time consistently.
  • Pay attention to courses with more credit hours.
  • Set realistic academic goals for each semester.

When Should You Use an HS GPA Calculator?

An HS GPA Calculator can be useful whenever you want a quick estimate of your current or semester GPA. Students commonly use it when reviewing their grades, planning future coursework, preparing for college applications, or checking how different course grades affect their overall GPA.

  • After receiving grades for several courses
  • Before planning your next semester

Frequently Asked Questions About HS GPA

What is a good high school GPA?

A good GPA depends on your school, courses, goals, and the requirements of the colleges or programs you are considering. A higher GPA generally indicates stronger academic performance, but admission decisions can consider many factors.

What is the highest GPA on a 4.0 scale?

On a standard unweighted 4.0 scale, the highest GPA is generally 4.00. Some schools use weighted scales that can allow GPAs above 4.00.

Does an A always equal 4.0 GPA?

On the standard scale used by this calculator, an A is worth 4.00 grade points. However, individual schools may use different grading policies.

Does GPA depend on credit hours?

Yes. When courses have different credit hours, a GPA calculation can give more weight to courses with more credits. This calculator uses credit hours when calculating the weighted average of grade points.

What is the difference between HS GPA and cumulative GPA?

An HS GPA can refer to a high school GPA calculated from your courses, while a cumulative GPA represents your overall GPA across the coursework included in your school's cumulative calculation. The exact definition can vary by school.

Can I calculate a weighted high school GPA?

This calculator uses an unweighted 4.0 scale. For Honors, AP, IB, or other weighted courses, use our Weighted GPA Calculator.

Can I add more than three courses?

Yes. Click the + Add Course button to add additional high school courses to the calculator.
