What Is a Test Grade Calculator?

A Test Grade Calculator helps you quickly calculate your test score as a percentage and determine the corresponding letter grade. Enter the total number of questions and the number of correct answers to see your result instantly.

The calculator also shows how many questions you answered incorrectly, making it easy to understand your test performance.

How to Calculate a Test Grade

To calculate your test grade, divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply the result by 100.

1
Find the total number of questions.

Count all questions included on the test.

2
Count your correct answers.

Determine how many questions you answered correctly.

3
Calculate the percentage.

Divide correct answers by total questions and multiply by 100.

How to Calculate Your Test Percentage

To calculate a test grade, divide the number of points you earned by the total number of points possible, then multiply by 100. This gives you your test percentage or test score percentage.

TEST PERCENTAGE Test Percentage = (Points Earned ÷ Points Possible) × 100

For example, if you earn 42 points on a test worth 50 points, your test percentage is:

42 points out of 50: (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%

You can use the same calculation for tests with different numbers of questions or points. When every question is worth the same number of points, you can also calculate your score by dividing the number of correct answers by the total number of questions.

TEST SCORE FROM CORRECT ANSWERS Test Score = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100

For example, if you answer 18 out of 20 questions correctly, your test score is 90%.

Test Grade Formula

The standard test grade formula is:

Test Grade = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100

To find the number of incorrect answers, subtract the correct answers from the total number of questions.

Incorrect Answers = Total Questions − Correct Answers

Test Grade Example

Suppose a test has 40 questions and you answer 34 questions correctly.

Correct answers: 34
Total questions: 40
Test grade: (34 ÷ 40) × 100 = 85%

You answered 6 questions incorrectly, so your test score is 85%.

Test Grade Chart

The following common grading scale can help you understand your test percentage. Grading policies may vary by school or instructor.

Percentage Letter Grade
90%–100% A
80%–89% B
70%–79% C
60%–69% D
Below 60% F

How Many Questions Can I Miss?

The number of questions you can miss depends on the total number of questions and the score you want to achieve.

For example, on a 40-question test:

Correct Wrong Score
40 0 100%
36 4 90%
34 6 85%
32 8 80%
28 12 70%

What Is a Good Test Grade?

A good test grade depends on your school’s grading scale, the difficulty of the test, and your personal academic goals. On a common grading scale, a score of 90% or higher is generally considered an A, while 80%–89% is generally considered a B.

Your teacher or school may use a different grading system, so always check the grading policy that applies to your course.
