Weighted Grade Calculator

Weighted Grade Calculator

Calculate your weighted grade and find out what you need on your remaining work.

What Is a Weighted Grade Calculator?

A Weighted Grade Calculator helps you calculate your course grade when different assignments or categories are worth different percentages of your final grade. Instead of treating every grade equally, a weighted calculation gives more importance to categories with larger weights.

For example, your homework may be worth 20% of your course grade, quizzes may be worth 30%, and exams may be worth 50%. If you have different percentages for each category, a weighted grade calculator can quickly determine your current grade.

Helpful Tip: A weighted grade is different from a simple average because each category can have a different effect on your overall grade.

Our calculator also shows your completed course weight and remaining weight. If you enter a target grade, it can estimate the percentage you need on your remaining work to reach that target.

How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator

You can calculate your weighted grade in a few simple steps:

  1. Enter the name of your grade category, such as Homework, Quizzes, Projects, or Exams.
  2. Enter your current grade percentage for that category.
  3. Enter the percentage weight of that category.
  4. Click + Add Another Grade to add more categories.
  5. Click Calculate Weighted Grade to calculate your current weighted grade.
  6. Enter a Target Grade if you want to know what grade you need on your remaining coursework.

The calculator displays your current weighted grade, completed course weight, remaining course weight, and the required grade for your target when enough course weight remains.

How to Calculate a Weighted Grade

To calculate a weighted grade, multiply each grade by its decimal weight. Then add the weighted values together. If you have completed only part of the course, divide the weighted points by the completed weight to find your current weighted grade.

For example, suppose you have a homework grade of 90% worth 20% and a quiz grade of 80% worth 30%.

Homework: 90 × 0.20 = 18

Quizzes: 80 × 0.30 = 24

Total Weighted Points: 18 + 24 = 42

The completed weight is:

20% + 30% = 50%

Therefore, the current weighted grade is:

42 ÷ 0.50 = 84.00%

So the current weighted grade is 84.00%.

If you simply need the average of several grades where every grade has equal importance, use our Average Grade Calculator.

Weighted Grade Formula

The general weighted grade formula is:

Weighted Grade = Σ (Grade × Weight) ÷ Σ Weight

When all category weights add up to 100%, you can calculate the final weighted grade by multiplying each grade by its decimal weight and adding the results.

Final Grade = (Grade₁ × Weight₁) + (Grade₂ × Weight₂) + …

Current Weighted Grade Formula

When only part of the course has been completed, use the completed weight to calculate your current weighted grade:

Current Weighted Grade = Total Weighted Points ÷ Completed Weight

The calculator uses these calculations automatically so you do not have to perform the calculations manually.

Weighted Grade Calculation Example

Suppose you have completed the following two categories:

Category Grade Weight
Homework 90% 20%
Quizzes 80% 30%

First, calculate the weighted points for each category:

90 × 0.20 = 18
80 × 0.30 = 24

Add the weighted points:

18 + 24 = 42

The completed course weight is:

20% + 30% = 50%

Now calculate the current weighted grade:

42 ÷ 0.50 = 84.00%
Your current weighted grade is 84.00%, and 50% of the course remains.

How to Calculate Grades by Weight

To calculate grades by weight, multiply each grade by its assigned weight and then add the weighted values together. The weight shows how much each category contributes to your overall course grade.

For example, suppose your homework is 25% of your grade, quizzes are 25%, and exams are 50%. If your grades are 90% for homework, 80% for quizzes, and 85% for exams, you can calculate your weighted grade as follows:

Homework: 90 × 0.25 = 22.50

Quizzes: 80 × 0.25 = 20.00

Exams: 85 × 0.50 = 42.50

Add the weighted values together:

22.50 + 20.00 + 42.50 = 85.00%

Therefore, the weighted grade is 85.00%.

Category Grade Weight Weighted Points
Homework 90% 25% 22.50
Quizzes 80% 25% 20.00
Exams 85% 50% 42.50
Total — 100% 85.00%

The larger the weight, the greater the effect that category has on your overall grade. This is why a high exam weight can have a bigger impact on your final grade than a lower-weight homework category.

If you want to calculate your weighted grade automatically, enter each category’s grade and weight in our Weighted Grade Calculator.

Example: Grade Calculator With Different Weights

Suppose your homework grade is 90% and is worth 25% of your course grade, your quiz grade is 80% and is worth 25%, and your exam grade is 85% and is worth 50%.

Calculate each weighted contribution:

Homework: 90 × 0.25 = 22.50
Quizzes: 80 × 0.25 = 20.00
Exams: 85 × 0.50 = 42.50

Add the weighted values together:

22.50 + 20.00 + 42.50 = 85.00%

Therefore, the weighted final grade is 85.00%. This method is useful when your grades have different weights and you need to calculate your overall course grade.

How Do Missing Assignments Affect a Weighted Grade?

A missing assignment can affect your grade depending on how your school or instructor handles missing work. If a missing assignment receives a zero, it can reduce the grade of its category and potentially lower your overall course grade.

The effect is generally larger when the assignment belongs to a category with a higher weight. For example, a missing exam can have a much greater effect than a missing homework assignment if exams represent a larger percentage of the course.

Important: Check your syllabus or grading policy to determine how missing, late, or incomplete assignments are handled in your course.

How to Calculate What You Need on Remaining Work

If you know your current grades and the amount of the course you have completed, you can calculate the score needed on your remaining work to reach a target grade.

Our Weighted Grade Calculator makes this easier. Enter your current categories and their weights, then enter your desired percentage in the Target Grade field.

For example, if your current weighted grade is 84%, you have completed 50% of the course, and you want a final grade of 90%, the calculator can determine the grade required on the remaining 50%.

In this example, you would need 96% on the remaining 50% of the course to finish with a 90% overall grade.

If your question is specifically about the grade you need on a final exam, you can also use our Final Exam Calculator.

Weighted Grade Calculator Example

Consider a course with these grading categories:

Category Grade Weight
Homework 92% 20%
Quizzes 85% 20%
Projects 90% 20%
Exams 88% 40%

The final weighted grade is calculated by multiplying each grade by its decimal weight and adding the results:

(92 × 0.20) + (85 × 0.20) + (90 × 0.20) + (88 × 0.40)

= 88.60%

Therefore, the student’s weighted course grade is 88.60%.

Weighted Grade vs. Average Grade

A weighted grade and a simple average are not always the same. A simple average gives every grade equal importance, while a weighted grade gives different levels of importance based on the assigned weights.

Weighted Grade Simple Average
Categories have different weights. Grades usually have equal importance.
Higher-weight categories have more influence. Each grade contributes equally.
Useful for courses with weighted categories. Useful when grades have equal value.

If all of your grades have equal importance, our Average Grade Calculator may be more appropriate.

What Is a Good Weighted Grade?

What counts as a good grade depends on your school, course, grading system, and academic goals. In many courses, a percentage in the 90s is considered excellent, while an 80s percentage is commonly considered good.

However, grading scales differ between schools and instructors. Always check your course syllabus for the grading scale used in your class.
